Personality:
"You have the heart of a chief, and the soul of a dragon."

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the village of Berk's hometown hero, a chief in his own right and leader of his people and his friends, a leader in innovation, and a leader in the pursuit of peace. He wasn't always thought of as such, however - growing up as the village runt, a 'hiccup' of a boy with wild flights of fancy, colored his perceptions of himself, and painted him with shades of insecurity that remain deeply entrenched even in adulthood.

On the surface, he's the man with a plan, who always pulls victory from the jaws of defeat by doing something stupid, or something crazy. Something out of the box. Hiccup is an innovator, an inventor, a free-thinker who questions why and how and wonders how they can do things differently. He's the first viking on Berk to befriend and ride a dragon instead of slaughtering them, a feat which other vikings thought absolutely nuts before he proved it could be done. He changed the way his village operated, and ended his tribe's war with dragons. As the son of the chief, and then the chief himself, he forged his own path, different from his ancestors'. Much of this stems from that deep-rooted desire to prove himself worthy. He was the village's laughingstock for most of his childhood; his father quickly grew tired of his flights of fancy and people would tell him to stop "all this" - all this, meaning, all of him. He was clumsy, not much of a warrior like his peers, and most vikings probably thought he'd get himself eaten by a dragon. His urge to be accepted led him to inventing in the blacksmith's shop, which led to him meeting Toothless. Even now, he can't separate his own successes from his dragon. In his mind, he's only as successful as he is because of Toothless - because his dragon is his everything, his best quality.

It isn't true at all. He has plenty of great qualities. Hiccup is brave; not fearless, per se, but courageous, if a bit of an adrenaline junkie. He's always a little wild, a little restless. He thinks nothing of plummeting thousands of feet in the air, knowing he'll be okay regardless, whether it's because his dragon will catch him, or because his flight suit will. He throws himself into battle with all the strategy and skills he's developed over the years, even though he'll never be a warrior like Astrid or his father. Even though he may get hurt. As long as the fight is for a good cause, he thinks nothing of charging into it.

At his core, too, Hiccup is compassionate, and empathetic, which he can sometimes take too far. It's a strength and a weakness both. The reason he doesn't kill Toothless in the woods after downing him is because he looks into the dragon's eyes, and he sees himself, a terrified young creature facing death head on. He releases him instead, and he earns the dragon's trust and friendship by connecting with him. Still, his empathy and determination to see the best in everyone leads to ruin when his insistence on talking to Drago Bludvist, on changing his mind, gets his father killed in front of him, by his own dragon. Stoick warned him that Drago was not the kind of man you can simply talk to, but Hiccup stubbornly refused to listen, and the Haddock family paid the price.

His stubbornness runs in the family. Just like Stoick, Hiccup is hard-headed and once he's set on a path, he follows it through. Growing up as the son of the chief, he doesn't exactly listen to authority, disobeying several of his father's direct orders through the course of his life, for better or worse. He respects his father, but in a lot of ways, he doesn't want to be his father, or at least doesn't think he's capable of being that great, which leads to his rebellion and trying to run away from responsibility. He's grown since then. The experience of losing his father, the man who raised him, by himself, while running a village, scarred Hiccup and made it so that he would not be so trusting outside the island of his home. He finally accepted his responsibility and his place as Chief of Berk, but still he bucks against tradition in a lot of ways. That fear that he will be judged and found lacking, that he'll never fill Stoick's shoes, is ever-present. Combined with a wandering heart, Hiccup can be quite reckless. Death is an occupational hazard for a viking, after all. He will do anything, even risk his own life, for his village and his friends, like when he took on the Red Death, or when he went after Drago and helped Toothless take on the dragon alpha. He nearly died both times.

When he's not nearly dying at the claws of a giant dragon, Hiccup is young, and restless, and totally normal. He tends to be the level head in his group of friends, but that doesn't mean he's always mature about it. He's always putting out unhelpful sarcastic comments and jokes, rolling his eyes, and chatting with Toothless. He loves exploring and learning, loves building things and tinkering, and can talk for hours about things he's excited about. He's completely oblivious to flirting, because he's devoted to his childhood crush and best friend, Astrid. Their romance develops slowly and naturally, and he shows no interest in other girls. When he isn't taking on the role of Chief, Hiccup just wants to find himself and live his life, like any early-20-something. He takes plenty of time to have fun, whether by himself with Toothless, or with his friends.

Hiccup will always be affected by his past, but instead of being defined by it, he always looks to the future. He has the heart of a chief, and the wild soul of a dragon, and his entire legacy is bringing those two worlds together, however briefly.

Abilities & Skills:
ULTIMATE VIKING DIY-ER: Hiccup, thanks to his apprenticeship in Gobber's forge from a young age and from living on an island where for generations, everyone's houses had to be rebuilt on the reg, is a proficient blacksmith, leatherworker, and builder. He designs architecture (on Dragon's Edge, and dragon-friendly things like feeding stations on Berk) and invents all manner of devices to make life easier for himself and for Berk. Custom saddles, new versions of his own prosthetic foot, new versions of Toothless' saddle and tail fin, a shield with a crossbow and a bola launcher in it, a retractable sword that lights itself on fire, and a flight suit that lets him glide in the air on his own are all things he invented or improved.
QUICK-THINKER AND PROBLEM-SOLVER: Being the runt of the village, Hiccup took to books and knowledge much more than a sword or an axe. He's smart and quick-thinking, often able to come up with solutions to problems on the fly and outwit other canon geniuses, like Viggo Grimborn, at strategy. He's also very observant and picks up on things others might not, except when it comes to romance.
DRAGON TRAINER: While Hiccup did not literally write the book on dragons, he is the one who has added the most to it over the years, besides maybe Fishlegs. He was the first viking on Berk to befriend and train a dragon, and showed all of Berk that it was possible. Now he's the foremost expert on dragons, especially Strike Class dragons. If a dragon is trainable, he can train it.
CARTOGRAPHER AND ARTIST: Hiccup is a talented artist and mapmaker, and produces a lot of very scientific sketches of dragons, islands they've visited, etc. He's also shown accurately mapping islands using a compass.
THIS IS TOOTHLESS: Hiccup's dragon is sort of an ability in itself. He and Toothless are incredibly close, and Toothless will attack or rescue if Hiccup is in danger. He can fly quite fast (though he can't fly without Hiccup), fire acetylene plasma blasts from his mouth, find his way in the dark with echolocation like a bat, and Toothless is quite smart and responsive, able to understand commands and mimic human behaviors like a particularly smart dog. His plasma blasts will be nerfed to much less powerful 'warning shots'.

Inventory/Companions:
- Toothless, his Night Fury, still wearing his saddle and tail fin.
- An extra prosthetic foot in the saddlebag. It's an older model than the one he's using currently.
- Inferno, a retractable sword with a modified hilt. One end coats the blade in Monstrous Nightmare gel (which will run out quickly), and one end releases Hideous Zippleback gas (which will also run out quickly). He won't be able to refill it and will likely have to learn to enchant it.
- Dragonscale armor.

Choice: Witch
Reason: Hiccup is a giant nerd who would be all about studying magic. Things like learning to enchant weapons and armor, or joining the Wilders to study the Cwyld out in the wild would be right up his alley. He's always been more brains than brawn and witch suits him much better.
