character information
name: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
canon: How to Train Your Dragon
canon point: Early HTTYD 2, on Itchy Armpit
age: 20

(canon) background: Hiccup @ Dreamworks Wikia

abilities:
- Blacksmithing & Inventions: Hiccup was apprenticed to Gobber at the forge from an early age and seems to know the ins and outs of blacksmithing to the point where at 15 and on he was making his own inventions, including a bola launcher, Toothless' prosthetic tail fin and saddle, a new stronger type of metal produced by Gronckle dragons, a shield with other tools in it like a bola and grappling hook, and a retractable sword that coats itself in Monstrous Nightmare gel and lights on fire. He's also made himself a flight suit, which lets him glide like a flying squirrel.
- Intelligence: Being the runt of the village, Hiccup took to books and knowledge much more than a sword or an axe. He's smart and quick-thinking, often able to come up with solutions to problems on the fly. He's also very observant and picks up on things others might not.
- Dragon Training & Knowledge: While Hiccup did not literally write the book on dragons, he is the one who has added the most to it over the years. He was the first viking on Berk to befriend and train a dragon, and showed all of Berk that it was possible. Now he's the foremost expert on dragons, especially Strike Class dragons and the extremely rare Night Fury. If a dragon is trainable, he can train it, and he's seen and dealt with dozens of different species.
- Cartography & Sketching: Hiccup is a talented artist and mapmaker. He's the primary one adding onto the map of the archipelago, and he's done a lot of dragon sketches for the Book of Dragons.
- Close Bond with Toothless: Hiccup's dragon is sort of an ability in itself. He and Toothless are incredibly close, and Toothless will attack or rescue if Hiccup is in danger. He can fly faster than any other dragon (though he can't fly without Hiccup), fire white-hot plasma blasts from his mouth, find his way in the dark with echolocation, and Toothless is quite smart and responsive, able to understand commands and mimic human behaviors.

strengths:
The first thing anybody from Berk would say about Hiccup is that he's highly intelligent, much more brains than brawn. He makes up for the areas in which he's lacking by doing a lot of reading and tinkering, and he's always curious about the world around him. He gets excited about new dragon species, new artifacts, new places, and he wants to learn everything about everything. Hiccup prefers to think out solutions rather than react with violence, and it helps that he is very resourceful and adaptable. As the scrawniest viking in the village, he had to figure out other ways to make his mark, such as building a bola-launching catapult to take down a dragon in the first movie. He thinks outside of the viking box, evidenced by the fact that he was the first viking on Berk to befriend and ride a dragon rather than kill it.

This is also because Hiccup is compassionate and empathetic - he looked into Toothless' eyes and saw himself, a creature just as frightened as he was. He put himself in the dragon's shoes and couldn't kill him, even though at the time it meant disappointing his father. He's a born peacekeeper with strong leadership qualities, and will choose to try and resolve an issue without violence. At the beginning of the second movie, he's convinced he can get through to Drago and talk him into dissolving his dragon army, thinking he can change anyone's minds about dragons. Hiccup is also determined. He doesn't give up, even when everything is against him and it looks hopeless. Knock him down and he gets back up again, even after losing half his leg.

weaknesses:
While he has many good qualities, Hiccup can be extremely stubborn and reckless, like most vikings. He doesn't jump into things without a plan, but his plans can be dangerous; he and the dragon riders, at fifteen, battled the Red Death and Hiccup could very easily have been killed taking it on with just his Night Fury, but he has a hard head, and even his father recognized there was no talking him out of it. It tends to be frustrating for the people around him. Even Toothless gets exasperated when he has to save his hapless rider one too many times. A stubborn viking and son of the chief, Hiccup also does not always listen to authority. He defies his father's orders without a second thought to do whatever he thinks is best anyway. Even as a child, he rarely listened, disappearing from his father's side to go look for trolls instead of fishing.

Hiccup is also driven by insecurity and a need to prove himself. He grew up the scrawniest and most useless viking in the village; even unrelated adults would yell at him to get inside when there was danger. The men who raised him would tell him 'Stop all this' and gesture to all of him and his peers ridiculed him. While that eventually changed, he still isn't always confident, and doubts his own fitness to be chief of Berk. He's still awkward with social interactions.

His empathy also gets him in trouble because he can be too emotional to where it's hard to make impartial decisions. He thinks he'll convince Drago to change his mind, but that turns out to be impossible, and culminates in Stoick's death. He will always have to wonder if things could have been different.

[The camera clicks on at an awkward angle at first, but soon the young man manages to right his device and set it on a table. He takes a few steps back to address it with a sheepish smile.] So, uh. Hello, everyone. Wow, this place is something else. A box that allows for instant communication... It's faster than terror-mail! I could really use some of these back home. Uh, anyway.

I've heard a lot about the Perimeter Guard, namely that you guys, uh. Kill monsters. [There's a slight, involuntary cringe at that, as if his soft heart can't quite take the thought. It's startled off him and back into a smile, though, when a large black creature stalks into the room, wide green eyes fixed curiously on him, and then the device.] This is just a little, you know, public service announcement. [Suddenly, the screen blacks out - or, more accurately, becomes filled with the shiny black scales of a Night Fury as Toothless leans in to sniff at the camera.]

C'mon, bud, I think you're- Toothless, don't-! [Toothless makes a sound almost like barks of rumbly laughter, and- then a pink tongue fills the screen. Hiccup wrestles the device back, and now the video is... a little bit watery. The dragon is back on his haunches, 'smiling' a big, gummy smile. Hiccup's voice is dry as he continues.] This is Toothless. He's my dragon, and my best friend, and he's not dangerous unless you threaten him, so if you see him around the city, you know, he's... he's not a monster. [As he fumbles with it, trying to wipe off dragon drool, Hiccup mutters just before it cuts out,] You know this doesn't wash out.
